چکیده

There are myriad causes of unexplained dyspnea and pleural effusion. When a patient presents with these symptoms, an underlying pulmonary pathology is the commonly suggested etiology. We present a patient with unexplained dyspnea and recurrent right-side pleural effusion who was evaluated with thorough physical examination and definitive imaging modalities, including right and left heart catheterization. The diagnosis was constrictive pericarditis. It is important to consider cardiac diseases, including constrictive pericarditis, in addition to underlying lung pathology, in patients with unexplained dyspnea and recurrent pleural effusion.

Chronic Constrictive Pericarditis

Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is a rare clinical entity that can pose diagnostic problems. The diagnosis of CP requires a high degree of clinical suspicion. The gold standard for diagnosis is cardiac catheterization with analysis of intracavitary pressure curves, which are high and, in end diastole, equal in all chambers. We present a patient with unexplained dyspnea, recurrent right-side pleu...

Tuberculous constrictive pericarditis complicated with tuberculous mediastinitis - case report.

Constrictive pericarditis is a rare and severe disease. A 37-year-old patient was admitted in the hospital for dyspnea, precordial pain, right-sided cardiac failure. Chest X-ray showed cardiac enlargement and an opacity suggestive for pleural effusion. Echocardiography revealed an adhesive-effusive-constrictive pericarditis, a very thickened pericardium and bilateral pleural effusion. After a p...

Unusual Bacterial Infections and the Pleura

Rickettsiosis, Q fever, tularemia, and anthrax are all bacterial diseases that can affect the pleura. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) and Mediterranean Spotted Fever (MSF) are caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia conorii, respectively. Pleural fluid from a patient with MSF had a neutrophil-predominant exudate. Coxiellaburnetii is the causative agent of Q fever. Of the two cases de...

Chylous ascites and pleural effusion secondary to constrictive pericarditis presenting with signs of lymphatic obstruction.

Chylous ascites is a clinical entity characterized by accumulation of milky fluid containing high amounts of triglycerides in the peritoneal cavity. The cause is usually lymphatic obstruction secondary to neoplastic processes. Constrictive pericarditis rarely causes cylous ascites through elevated venous pressure and lymphatic stasis. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report of constric...
